CHRISTIAN BALE, MICHAEL CAINE and MORGAN FREEMAN have signed to star in a second BATMAN movie, but love interest KATIE HOLMES has been dropped.Movie bosses are thrilled with the response to BATMAN BEGINS - it took $46.9 million (GBP24.6 million) in its first weekend (17-19JUN05) at the US box office - and have snapped up the film's stars for a sequel. Bale as Batman was the first to put pen to paper, followed by Caine as butler ALFRED and Freeman as BRUCE WAYNE'S business associate LUCIUS FOX.But Holmes wont reprise her role as district attorney RACHEL DAWES - reportedly because WARNER BROS is angry her engagement to TOM CRUISE has stolen media attention away from the movie.A source tells PAGESIX.COM, "Everyone is in agreement that the movie's strength is with Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman." Adding of Holmes, "She won't be in the sequel... the next romantic interest will be a much stronger actress. "Warner is happy that people are now focusing on who'll be playing the JOKER rather than Katie and Tom." The media attention toward the Tom-Katie relationship is really annoying not only for the public but for the couple too. It's not really her fault that the media focuses more on her being Tom Cruise's girlfriend and less on her being on the film. However, I can't completely take the blame off of her when she discusses more about Tom and less about her own movie in interviews.
I say let Rachel come back for the second one because the average public (as I've talked to my friends) is tired of Batman having different girlfriends in each movie. They don't necessarily want a Lois Lane or Mary Jane thing, but someone who is interesting and lasts more than one movie. Dropping Rachel would also leave some kind of a hole in the story, wouldn't it?
And who knows if this is really true....

I think this is mainly at rumor stage right now, and I would like to see Rachel return, in a reduced role... They can do a lot with the story by doing a little with her character. Have Dent be the D.A. Have her help him. Have her have a relationship with him. Have her have sparks with Bruce, but nothing more, because she's with Dent, and both of them know they can't be together because of Bruce's trouble with duality. Bruce feels like crap when looking at how happy Dent and Rachel are, and thinks that that should and could have been him. Then, to pi$$ Dent and Bruce off, and to make the Joker a mega badass, have him kill off Rachel. Everybody wins in that case, those who dislike Rachel, and it would do wonders for the story, in setting up Dent's demise, and the dynamic between Batman and the Joker. It writes itself, it would be easy to pull off. What I am worried about, if this is true, is...where's the mention about Gary Oldman signing on?

Don't worry about it. People asked him at the premiere about returning and he said, "I still have to become Commissioner." He's gonna come back, don't worry.

I also read in my newspaper that had one of those correspondants for many papers also state that Bale had signed on. All you need really is Bale, Caine, Oldman, and Freeman.

I think Rachel basically said “Goodbye” at the end of the movie at the remains of Wayne Manor. So I was not expecting her to come back. They could do like the Bond films do and have a new “Bat Girl” for Bruce in each movie.
Tom Cruise is simply using Katie to keep them both in the spotlight for their films, but Tom overshadowed almost everyone at the Batman Begins Premiere. Tom has been married and divorced twice and I doubt that Katie will fair any different if they do get married.

I hope that in the end it will be up to Nolan/Goyer if Rachel stays or goes. I pray that they won Warners trust with Begins being made the way it should be and being successful at the same time. I found "TomKat" as annoying in the media as anyone but Katie was competent in the movie. I hope they all do what is right for the integrity of the franchise.

How about Rachel being Joker's first on screen victim?

I'd be able to live with that as long as her death scene is something big in the movie, not some throw-away scene where she easily gets offed and people barely talk about her for the rest of the film.

Katie was never scheduled to come back anyways. This is actually a false report.

Weren't there reports that she said that she could be back? I don't know, I guess we shouldn't believe any reports up until we hear about the movie getting officially greenlighted, scripted and casted...
Right now, it's all rumors I suppose. I mean, half the world is being suggested for the Joker and Two Face roles.
