What is it about the Batman mythos that first got you into liking the Dark Knight ?

It all started with the 60s series being replayed on television, then I really got into it in 1989 after the first major motion picture. It also helped that I was really into the toys. ;D

For me I had first seen the "not so Dark" Knight in the classic '60's series starring Adam West, but for me what cemented my obsession with Batman was the 1989 flim starring Michael Keaton. from then it grew intensley when I had started to get the figures and it pretty much stayed as a constant interest from then on.

I suppose it started with the 89 film. I don't know why, but I'd always been a Batman fan. I suppose I was about 4 when I saw the film (born in 1987). One of my earliest memories has got to be my dad carrying me on his shoulders in a video store, and buying the film on tape. I've got no idea why. Maybe he liked the film too. Anyway, I'd watch the film nearly every day after that, run around with a blanket tied to my neck, and wear my collar up high like Keaton as Bruce Wayne. I've unfortunately never managed to get into the comics really...just didn't have the time. I have a few comics of Batman and X-Men, and my father was a huge collector of Superman comics both as a child and as an adult, but I just never really got into them, though I guess I should read the famous graphic novels one day... I've of course seen all the Batman films, seen parts of the 60s series (and of course took it very seriously because I was about 10 ), seen the animated series which I've always loved, and am highly anticipating Batman Begins. (Which I read the script of, and am sure that it will kick major ass, and will surpass whatever has come before it, not only in terms of the previous Batman movies, but in the comic-book genre in general. I just am that confident about this movie. ;D )

And yes, I too think BEGINS will surpass any and all things Batman done before it. I too was never really into comics, but in 2003 I bought my first one which was Batman: Year One the graphic novel. It was an impluse by, which is weird because I was always a fan of the movies.

My first experience was the Adam West TV show as a kid. I thought it was the dumbest thing on earth (still do, sorry guys). Then I saw the 89 Batman with Keaton and went "bat crazy" from there on out. I started to read the comics and then the Animated series started and I was hooked. The thing about Batman is that he has no super powers. Everything he has, he has had to work for. All the brains, muscles, speed, detective skills, everything was sought after and achieved.

I grew up watching my VHS of B89 almost daily; I loved it that much. After every viewing, I would listen to a taped dramatization of the first half of Len Wein's The Untold Legend of the Batman, telling more about the Pre-Crisis origin of Batman (i.e. Joe Chill and Lew Moxon). It was cool. ;D

It was Dark Knight Returns that did it for me, back in '86. My first impression of Batman had been the Adam West show, and then the Superfriends cartoons on Saturday mornings. I used to think Batman was the biggest loser after watching those. Then I was blown away by Miller's Dark Knight stuff. I didn't know before that that Batman was supposed to be this menacing, tormented badass and then I became totally obsessed with Batman. I used to sign my homework papers in high school as "Batman."
So ever since then I've used old-school stuff like DKR, Year One, Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, and Blind Justice as measuring sticks. I think it's why I never could get into the more recent Jeph Loeb stuff.

What is it about the Batman mythos that first got you into liking the Dark Knight ? Great topic! Well, my father was a life-long Batman fan, and he taught the ways of the Dark Knight to me throughout my lifetime... So, in a way, the stories of Batman have become "something else entirely" ( ;D) to me in comparison to "Joe Chill" ( ;D ) on the streets...
